Getting pierced is the easy part - the correct after-care is key to have happy piercings, and it really doesn't have to be complicated! Please read the below carefully.

Piercing After-care
Congratulations on your new piercing!

A certain amount of after-care is essential to keep your piercing happy - a happy piercing will heal a lot faster!

When a piercing is done, you are breaking the skin to create a clean 'tunnel' through the area in question. Your skin then has to heal through the tunnel and meet in the middle. This can take up to 12 months or more depending on your general health, stress levels, after-care advice, how many piercings you've had, current medication, heavy monthlies (girls) and a whole plethora of other variables.

Some people get pierced and it's calm from the off and it heals with little to no swelling - other people get pierced and it's the opposite. Our bodies all react differently to each piercing so it isn't a one size fits all for after-care. With this being said there are some bullet points you should follow.

1. Keep your hands off your piercings at all times! No twiddling, turning or faffing please. It's harder than it sounds!

2. Bathe your new piercing as and when you bathe. So, when you shower make sure you rinse your piercing with clean water, and when you have a day off, don't be afraid to give your piercing a day off too. Other than this, keep your hands OFF!

3. If you see an obvious crusty then take care of it with a clean tissue or ear bud. If you don't have crusties, please don't faff with your piercing for the sake of it. Leave. It. Alone.

4. Ibuprofen will help with swelling if necessary.

5. If your piercing is generally well behaved and suddenly is very irritated it hasn't necessarily 'gone bad'. Try and take into account lifestyle stresses such as periods, stress, anxiety, workloads, tiredness, illnesses - all of these things can set a healthy piercing off for no reason. Follow the basic after-care above and these issues usually resolve themselves in a few days.

6. Please don't be tempted to put alcohol, hydrogen peroxide or similar to clean your piercings. They dry the area and kill new cells making your recovery slower, not faster.

7. Your piercing jewellery should stay in for 12 weeks minimum. Your piercings wont be healed by then, but they should be calm enough for you to change it if you need to. Again results can vary depending on your situation.

All of the advice above is really simple and doable - don't over complicate it. Over cleaning can be just as damaging as not cleaning at all!

Checking your jewellery is all down to you - once a week please check that the fronts are secure. With clean hands hold the back still and turn the front clockwise to tighten. (Lefty loosey, righty tighty). Have a friend help if you can.

I'm more than happy to receive your messages if you need further advice or want a deep clean at the studio. If of course you're worried or are in great pain, please contact your GP.

Recap for kids' ears - please try not to touch! Bathe once a day with clean water (a pinch of salt can be added if they need a deeper clean but not necessary every time). The jewellery must stay in for 12 weeks minimum - they won't be healed by then but should be calm enough for you to change them should you want to.
